  • A 2-year certification, issued through the Health and Safety Institute (HSI®), will be provided upon successful completion of the course.

This HSI® training program has been approved by the HSI® Medical Advisory Board and reviewed by the HSI® Advisory Council. It reflects the latest first aid and resuscitation science and treatment recommendations of the 2020 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) and the 2020 International Consensus on First Aid Science with Treatment Recommendations published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). It conforms with the 2020 American Heart Association®, Inc. (AHA) Guidelines Update for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC), and the 2020 AHA and American Red Cross (ARC) Focused Update for First Aid the annual Guidelines Update.

This HSI® Training Program incorporates AHA recommendations regarding resuscitation education science and reflects established models, theories, and principles of instructional design and training development that have been integrated into HSI® training program brands for more than 40 years.

HSI is a nationally accredited organization of the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) and nationally approved by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) Program Approval for Continuing Education (PACE) as a continuing dental education (CDE) provider.

 

Learning Objectives

The goal of this training program is for trainees to gain or improve knowledge and skill proficiency in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED). This course reflects the latest resuscitation science and treatment recommendations published by the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), and it conforms with the 2020 American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines Update for CPR and ECC and the annual Guidelines Update.

Following this course, trainees should be able to:

  • Summarize the basic legal concepts (e.g., Good Samaritan law) that apply to providing first aid, performing CPR, and/or using an AED;
  • Recognize the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and a safety-oriented home and workplace culture;
  • Recognize the rescuer’s role, responsibilities, and priorities;
  • Understand their applicable level of training and the importance of not exceeding it during a medical emergency;
  • Recognize the main elements to the procedure for CPR and the use of an AED;
  • Recognize the elements of high-quality CPR and their importance on survival from cardiac arrest;
  • Identify the links in the sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) “Chain of Survival”;
  • Perform a rapid patient assessment;
  • Recognize when high-quality CPR is required;
  • Describe and correctly demonstrate how to perform high-quality CPR, including providing effective rescue breaths;
  • Describe and correctly demonstrate how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED);
  • Describe and correctly demonstrate how to provide treatment for a choking patient;
  • Properly select the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE);
  • Correctly demonstrate the removal of contaminated personal protective equipment (PPE);
  • Describe and correctly demonstrate various adult first aid procedures;
  • Describe how to recognize and provide first aid treatment for injury, medical, and environmental emergencies;
  • Correctly demonstrate how to control severe external bleeding;
  • Correctly demonstrate how to use an epinephrine autoinjector (e.g., EpiPen®);
  • Recognize opioid-related emergencies and how to administer intranasal Naloxone (Narcan®);*
  • Understand and be able to apply universal precautions; and
  • Work both independently and as a team during medical emergencies, understanding the importance of good team dynamics.
